Approximatley 60 sailors and officers of Sydney base, HMAS Watson volunteered throughout the recent Legacy Week to raise funds and awareness for the charity that supports Defence families.

Watson
spread volunteers from Watsons Bay, to Bondi and Edgecliff, covering a substantial portion of Eastern Sydney.

The team raised a mammoth $20,000 for the cause between 27 August and 2 September.

Personnel fundraising in the Rose Bay and Vaucluse area raised over $4,000 in a concentrated effort on the last day of the fundraising period.

Sub Lieutenant Ben Walker, a Maritime Warfare Officer trainee, was one of the volunteers who helped raise more than $2,000 through collections in Edgecliff.

“It’s amazing to see people from all different backgrounds giving to a worthy cause,” he said.

Many of the donations came from members of the public who had seen the tremendous contribution Legacy has made in the lives of countless people following its inception during the Second World War.

The funds raised will support the widows and children of Australian service men and women that have not returned home. This support includes things such as schooling, housing, medical and social support.
