Chief Petty Officer Greg Thomms, Chief of the Boat in HMAS Waller, is presented the inaugural Ric Ellam Perpetual Award by Mrs. Olwen Ellam during a team building sports day at HMAS Stirling. The award recognises an individual's outstanding contribution to Waller during the year.

The crew of Royal Australian Navy submarine HMAS Waller have a special relationship with a United Kingdom family that is now enshrined in an annual award for excellence.

Captain Matt Buckley was born in Sydney and spent his childhood years growing up in Wollongong. He joined the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1990 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts.

Commander Rod Robinson joined the Navy in 1982 as a Midshipman to see the world and because he was attracted to the sea. Which was something very different to the country town where he grew up in Far North Queensland. He was also attracted to the idea of leading others in challenging circumstances.
