The Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral (VADM) Timothy Barrett, AO, CSC, RAN, stands with the six crew members of the Indian Sail Training Ship Tarini berthed at the Fremantle Yacht Club during his visit to the vessel in Fremantle, Western Australia.

Indian Navy sailing boat INSV Tarini stopped in Fremantle recently, further developing the friendship with the Royal Australian Navy before sailing ‘across the ditch’ as part of a historic journey to circumnavigate the world.

Sub Lieutenant Dean Gazzola gives Mr John Sharp from Defence Veterans Affairs, Mr Eddie Koza and his sons Alex and Luke a tour of HMAS Waller during the Port of Fremantle Maritime Day held on Victoria Quay in Fremantle.

With the decks swabbed and the bulkheads scrubbed, submarine HMAS Waller featured quayside for all to see during Maritime Day in the working Port of Fremantle.

One hundred and three years ago Australia’s first submarine, HMAS AE1, disappeared while patrolling the seas near present-day New Guinea. No trace of the vessel or its 35 hands has ever been found. This story is now being told in a new exhibition at the Queensland Maritime Museum, ‘War at Sea – the Navy in WWI’.
