Images of remotely piloted aircraft soaring over a naval fleet might seem like an ultramodern picture. But unmanned aircraft are nothing new to the Fleet Air Arm, which has provided remotely piloted targets for gunnery practice since 1953.

The Schiebel S100 Camcopter has been acquired by the Royal Australian Navy to support trials and evaluation activities to reduce risks ahead of acquiring a permanent unmanned aircraft system capability in the early 2020s.

The next phase of introducing an unmanned aircraft system capability to the Royal Australian Navy has progressed.

A Defence Science Technology Organisation (DSTO) team was deployed to the Exercise TALISMAN SABRE 2013 exercise area in early July to demonstrate and evaluate the potential Defence benefits of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) for long duration remote sensing of the under sea environment.
