The crew of the Royal Australian Navy's second Landing Helicopter Dock, NUSHIP Adelaide has taken time out from preparing for commissioning in December to talk about domestic violence issues.

Nearly four hundred members of ship's company formed themselves into the shape of a large White Ribbon on the flight deck after their recent arrival at Fleet Base East, Sydney. The ship's Commander Air, Commander Mat Bradley, said the crew was enthusiastic about taking part.

"As the Navy’s newest amphibious capability, we just can’t do our job without being an inclusive ship’s company," Commander Bradley said.

"We wanted to show that we are all united for a common good."

The task of shaping the 'people ribbon' took considerable coordination and the White Ribbon took on a green hue, with Adelaide’s Army contingent also taking part.

Navy was the first of the services to become a White Ribbon accredited workplace, with the Australian Army gaining accrediation this month.

"The White Ribbon Campaign is about recognising the positive role that men play in preventing violence against women,’ Commander Bradley said.

"This is an issue we need to talk about more.

"If what we did sparks a conversation, then it’s been worth the effort."

White Ribbon is Australia’s only national, male led campaign to end men’s violence against women, which it achieves by encouraging men to never be silent about domestic violence.
