As HMAS Success began the last phase of her preparation for a lengthy deployment in November, the ship’s company welcomed a new Commanding Officer.

Captain Justin Jones took command at the gangway of Success after his predecessor, Captain Allison Norris, completed a circuit of the ship’s main deck whilst sharing a few words with each member of the crew. The outgoing Commanding Officer symbolically transferred command by passing over custody of the ship’s gun, a miniature brass cannon.

Captain Jones addressed the crew, reminding them of the importance of their upcoming deployment to the Middle East Region and the need for all personnel to contribute to the mission for a safe and successful outcome.

"If there’s one thing you need to know about me, it’s that I believe in the team. We’re all highly trained and professional in our approach. We are mariners and above all, we are proud to be representing our country as members of the Royal Australian Navy," he said.

Captain Jones was most recently Director of the Navy’s Sea Power Centre - Australia and commanded HMAS Newcastle from 2008 to 2010. He previously served in HMA Ships Brisbane, Success (as a Midshipman), Bunbury, Westralia, Hobart, Wollongong, Sydney, Arunta, Manoora and Parramatta.

HMAS Success will deploy to Operation MANITOU, to contribute to the international effort to promote maritime security, stability and prosperity to the Middle East Region. She will be part of Combined Task Force 53, supporting allied ships through the provision of replenishment support, and will also conduct coalition and regional engagement.
