New Zealand’s vital link in catching pirates

In a true display of Anzac spirit, three Royal New Zealand Navy sailors on board HMAS Melbourne, have been instrumental in an operation involving the interception of nine suspected pirates off the coast of Somalia.

Family and friends gather at Garden Island, Sydney to welcome home their loved ones embarked on HMAS Newcastle, following a six month deployment to the Middle East Area of Operations.

The crew of the Adelaide class Guided Missile Frigate HMAS Newcastle has returned home to Sydney today, after a six-month deployment to the Middle East Area of Operations. Hundreds of loved ones were waiting for them on the wharf at Fleet Base East, Garden Island.

The prospect of handing over and heading home after a long deployment is reason enough to smile, but for three members of HMAS Newcastle there was an added incentive.

HMAS Melbourne conducted her first Replenishment At Sea (RAS) with Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) Fort Victoria, taking on 300,000 litres of fuel in less than 60 minutes.
