Adverse weather conditions couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm when competition for the 2013 Lord Stonehaven Cup was kicked off with a game of touch football which attracted 80 participants from throughout HMAS Albatross.
The competition somewhat languished but has now been reinvigorated with a monthly program of sporting events which aims to develop teamwork, camaraderie and athleticism among both Defence and civilian personnel.
The Stonehaven Cup was originally presented to HMAS Albatross in 1929 by John Lawrence Baird, 1st Viscount Shoalhaven, GCMG, DSO, eighth Governor-General of Australia for annual competition amongst Albatross units.
Competition co-ordinator Physical Trainer PO Chris Vales said he was very pleased with the response.
“It was excellent to see such a great turnout. The field held up well and both players and spectators were unperturbed by the blistering rain and random conditions. This fantastic attitude bodes well for the rest of the competition.”
Winners of the first round were 808 SQN, with TA-AVN placing second and NASPO third.
PTPO Vales said the fairness on the field and sportsmanship was second to none.
“This clearly demonstrates that the sporting culture at Albatross is alive and well.”
