ADF personnel from across the country joined in the fight against COVID-19 when they boarded a Royal Australian Air Force C-17A Globemaster and headed to Avalon Airport, south west of Melbourne in Victoria last week.

Defence School Mentor for Redlynch State College, Nadine Eddy, with Year 6 student Jakob Cross, 11, and the letter he wrote for local Navy veteran Ken Traill.

Students from Redlynch State College in Cairns brought a tear to the eyes of veterans and serving members alike with their handwritten Anzac letters of thanks, part of a campaign to connect with veterans and serving ADF members who may have felt isolated on Anzac Day 2020.

Deputy Chief of Navy, Rear Admiral Mark Hammond, AM, RAN; former Warrant Officer Boatswain Ian Chill; and Commanding Officer of HMAS Cairns, Commander David Hannah, at the official naming of the WOB Ian Chill Combined Mess.

To commemorate the service of a former Warrant Officer who was severely injured while on duty overseas, the newly refurbished combined ranks mess at HMAS Cairns has been named in his honour.

Officers and sailors from HMAS Cairns took to kayaks to help clear Cairns waterways from rubbish during the Great Northern Cleanup.

Navy initiative and community spirit was on display in Far North Queensland as personnel from HMAS Cairns took to the water in kayaks to contribute to the ‘Great Northern Clean Up’, a preservation program for the regional environment.

With the local mountain biking season in full swing, ten energetic sailors from HMAS Cairns saddled up for a day of physical challenges as they represented Navy in the RRR Mountain Bike Challenge.
