Royal Australian Navy frigate HMAS Newcastle patrolling with the Combined Maritime Forces in the Middle East Region has seized another 581kg of illegal narcotics with an estimated street value of approximately $520 million.
HMAS Newcastle was farewelled from Garden Island, Sydney on 1 April, setting course for the Middle East Region where she will spend six months deployed as part of Operation MANITOU.

The ship’s company of HMAS Newcastle recently occupied Building 68 on the Garden Island Defence Precinct in Sydney while their ship underwent a maintenance and production period. Once the docking dependant work was complete, Newcastle vacated the dock to make way for the mighty NUSHIP Canberra.
The crew of HMAS Newcastle share a close relationship with the Newcastle Senior School, the ship’s nominated charity, and members of the ship’s company take the opportunity to visit the school and its pupils when the ship is alongside her home port.
HMAS Newcastle welcomed in the New Year with a visit from Commander Australian Fleet, Rear Admiral (RADM) Barrett, AM, CSC, for the presentation of two Fleet Awards which Newcastle earned for its performance in 2013.
HMAS Newcastle recently embarked on one of the biggest maintenance tasks a warship can undergo - replacing its Mk 13 Guided Missile Launching System (GMLS), often referred to as the ‘one-armed bandit’ due to its distinctive single-armed design.
