The chefs stopped cooking, the cleaners upped and left, the fire-station seemed eerily quiet and phones were left unanswered across HMAS Creswell recently - but the Serco Sodexho Defence Services (SSDS) Site Manager, Tim Went, shouldn’t have worried because his staff were only stopping to acknowledge the efforts of their boss.

Mr Went was unaware that the base-wide pause had occurred so that he could receive a Fleet Commander’s Bronze Commendation from Captain Brett Chandler, Commanding Officer of HMAS Creswell.

Looking back on a very busy year at Creswell, it was hard to find an event that Mr Went and his team hadn’t played a major part in, so it was only the recipient that was surprised when Captain Chandler read the citation to the assembled crowd.

“Your devotion to duty and customer focus ensures that Creswell remains well supported in day-to-day activities and in special events such as the International Fleet Review.

“Your hands-on approach to problem solving and troubleshooting ensures a timely response to any issues - you have an exceptional ability to motivate, lead, direct and work alongside your staff in the conduct of their duties, particularly during complex and demanding events,” said Captain Chandler.

Mr Went credited the hard work of his staff for the smooth running of all operations - a testament to his team ethos and inclusive style.

Recognition of Mr Went’s efforts was an undertaking of both Navy and the Defence Support and Reform Group (DSRG) to highlight the strength of the relationships and the benefits that have ensued.
