Dedicated to positively shifting organisational culture, the Royal Australian Navy has merged two key leadership and cultural directorates, forming the Directorate of Navy Culture.
The merge incorporates New Generation Navy and the Directorate of Navy Leadership and Culture Development, and means that more resources will be devoted to realising the leadership potential of Navy people and delivering on Chief of Navy’s culture program - NEXT Generation Navy.
The Director of Navy Culture, Captain Paul Moggach, said that he was looking forward to leading organisational culture change across Navy.
“The purpose of the Directorate of Navy Culture is to develop Navy’s greatest asset: our people,” Captain Moggach said.
“We’ve combined our research cell, leadership and team development groups, and introduced the strategy and initiatives team.
“This approach means that from input through to output we are one hundred percent focused on our people, maximising corporate knowledge, academic research and experience in the delivery of Navy’s culture change program,” he said.
The new Directorate’s immediate focus is on developing Navy’s leaders, foremost through a series of leadership forums held across Australia.
The first of the Navy Emerging Leaders Forum series was held in Sydney in May, and centred on the theme of ‘Leading For Success’.
”Navy members from the ranks of Lieutenant, Sub Lieutenant, Petty Officer and Leading Seaman are not only our frontline managers, but they are our frontline leaders,” Captain Moggach said.
“The Directorate will support these ranks through the delivery of leadership development workshops, coaching programs and our leadership forums.
“Every Navy member has the opportunity to be the best leader they can be and Navy will support each person in their professional development,” he said.
Chief of Navy has endorsed the five pillars of the NEXT Generation Navy Program. These are:
- Value our people
- Develop leaders who value their teams
- Enhance resilience
- Instill a sense of purpose
- Drive to professional mastery
“It is through these pillars that NEXT Generation Navy will create and manage initiatives and support the broader culture work that evolves from Pathway to Change,” Captain Moggach said.
“Essentially, it comes down to the fact that Navy people deserve a culture that will bring out their best. That is what we will deliver,” he said.
