Navy sportswomen have played a key role in a networking event aimed at promoting and improving opportunities for female athletes.
The Minerva Networking Event was held in Sydney on 30 August and brought together elite sportswomen from across a range of disciplines, all with one goal in mind.
Mentor Program Director and co-founder, Ms Romilly Madew, said that the Minerva Mission was to develop a network of experienced businesswomen to mentor professional sportswomen as they navigate their challenges on and off the field.
“The Minerva Network is a collaborative and dynamic group of inspiring women willing to support each other.
“The network has been established at a time when we are at a tipping point for women's sport in Australia,” Ms Madew said.
There is no doubt inroads have been made towards an inclusive Navy. Part of that fundamental change in mindset includes active support for female participation in sport.
Defence provided representation at the Minerva Network Event through attendance of four sportswomen; three Navy and one from RAAF. Attendees included Petty Officer Amy Carpenter (rugby union), Lieutenant Commander Victoria Jnitova (Nordic skiing), Leading Seaman Vanessa Broughill (athletics and swimming) and RAAF member Leading Aircraftswoman Ashleigh Doble (indoor hockey and cricket).
Lieutenant Commander Frazer Stephenson, Diversity and Inclusion representative, also attended.
Jane Spring, a Minerva mentor, has worked for six years at the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and represented NSW in lightweight rowing and wheelchair basketball. Her board roles have included the University of Sydney Senate, Venues NSW, Wheelchair Sports Australia and the Western Sydney Local Health District.
“I participate in the Minerva event as a mentor because as a former athlete I know that mentoring and support networks make a huge difference.”
The Minerva network is fully involved in supporting athletes who are participating in the upcoming Invictus Games.
