Able Seaman Communication Information Systems Harley Dowling, of HMAS Pierie, won $5000 in the Win with Navy Raffle in Draw 150.

A Darwin-based sailor’s concerns about the cost of some bike repairs were quickly sorted when he won $5,000 in the Win with Navy Raffle in Draw 150.

Able Seaman Communication and Information Systems Harley Dowling, of Patrol Boat, HMAS Pirie, said it was excellent timing and terrific news.

“I was recently out in the middle of nowhere on my brand new dirt bike when it decided to drop all its oil and seize up,” Able Seaman Dowling said.

“I was told the repair bill would be close to $5,000 if not covered under warranty.

“It was funny because the crew and I were talking about the raffle at a Divisional meeting the day before the draw.

“I had told all my mates to join the raffle because it’s a great cause.”

He said it was one way to give back to other sailors and $10 each pay wasn’t much.

Able Seaman Dowling said he loved living in the Northern Territory.

“The best way to describe life on patrols boats is that we work hard and we play hard,” he said.

“The work we do is not the easiest, but when we have time off we get to do some cool stuff in the best place in Australia.”

Raffle manager Jak Goudman said the Win with Navy Raffle was a Navy Canteens organisation initiative developed to raise funds for Navy welfare.

“Navy Canteens distributes the funds to Navy sport, the Royal Australian Navy Relief Trust Fund and grants for sailors’ recreational purposes,” Mr Goudman said.

“More than $3 million has been distributed in grants to Navy welfare projects and sport since the start of the raffle four years ago.

“So far, nearly $1 million in prize money has been won by more than 150 Navy Raffle members.”
