Two personnel from HMAS Cairns recently swapped North Queensland’s humid climate for Canada’s extreme cold when they represented the Royal Australian Navy and the Australian Defence Force in the 2014 Canadian Paralympic Committee and Soldier On winter sports camp.

Navy men’s and women’s futsal teams put out a strong showing at the Australian Defence Force Futsal (ADFF) National Carnival at the weekend with the men coming away with the Inter-Service Shield and 2nd overall.

Navy came within a whisker of winning the 2nd annual King’s Cup basketball championship but were beaten 43-40 by a combined Air Force and Army team.

Leading Seaman Physical Trainer Steve McWilliams referees one of the volleyball games during the HMAS Stirling Monthly Sports Challenge.

The first round of the inaugural monthly sports challenge competition was held last week at HMAS Stirling. In order to bring together people from the many lodger units at the Navy's large West Australian base, the physical training instructors at Stirling designed a competition comprising of a different sporting event each month.

Preparations are well underway for the 2014 Australian Defence Football Federation National Futsal Carnival to be held at University of Sydney on Saturday 1st March.

The Stonehaven Cup was originally presented to HMAS Albatross in 1929 by John Lawrence Baird, 1st Viscount Shoalhaven, GCMG, DSO, eighth Governor General of Australia, for an annual competition between Albatross units to develop teamwork, camaraderie and athleticism amongst both Defence and civilian personnel.
