Captain Simon Bateman was no stranger to HMAS Albatross when he assumed command in December 2013, but as he hands over command, he reflects on the changes achieved throughout his tenure.

Rear Admiral Noonan promoted Lieutenant Commander Kenny to Commander on board the F105 Cristóbal Colón in front of Commander Kenny’s family, Armada peers and Cristóbal Colón crew members.

As part of the recent Navy to Navy talks conducted in Spain between the Spanish Armada and the Royal Australian Navy, a unique opportunity was presented enabling the promotion of an Australian officer on board a Spanish warship.

Early in January HMAS Leeuwin set sail from Cairns to begin a transit to conduct military data gathering operations in the Bass Strait. A number of Australian Navy Cadets and family members for ship's company joined the ship for the first day of the deployment.

Commanding Officer HMAS Cerberus, Captain Steve Bowater, OAM, RAN presented a Young Diggers Dog Squad cheque for $31,306 to Chief Executive Officer of Defence Bank Mr John Linehan and Ms Leanne Kyle, Executive Manager of Defence Bank Foundation. The Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) and his wife, Her Excellency Lady Cosgrove, also attended the presentation. Navy personnel at HMAS Cerberus have presented a cheque for more than $31,000 to the Defence Community Dogs program, which supports the training of therapy dogs to help veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Despite the oft sung words in the national anthem, Australians live often detached from the reality that “…our home is girt by sea”. In Canberra on 30 January, senior Defence leaders gathered at the Australian War Memorial to help launch a book that highlights Australia’s reliance on sea trade and a formidable Navy to protect sea lanes and prosperity.

Able Seaman Medic Shunsuke Takahashi checks the blood pressure of Ella Cordell (6) while sister Lily (8) watches closely at the ambulance display during the HMAS Stirling Families Day.

The gates were opened to Fleet Base West on 25 January, when HMAS Stirling hosted a Families Day for its 3,000 Defence and Australian Public Service personnel on Garden Island, Rockingham.

HMAS Leeuwin hosted the City of Port Adelaide Enfield Australia Day citizenship ceremony in Port Adelaide, welcoming new Aussies with Minister for Defence Industry the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, and Lieutenant Commander Adam Muckalt.

Royal Australian Navy people spent time on Australia Day getting out into the community. From flag raising ceremonies to an Open Day, the Navy helped celebrate Australia and show how proud all Navy members are to protect Australia’s lifestyle and freedoms.
