Six crew members of Armidale Class patrol boat HMAS Childers have answered the call for an increase in blood donations while alongside in HMAS Cairns.

The donations were made as part of the Navy contribution to the Red 25 group donation program, which has a goal of achieving 25% of the blood donations needed in Australia.

The six Childers members visited the Cairns Red Cross Blood Donation Centre while the boat was undergoing scheduled maintenance and provided donations of whole blood and plasma.

For first-time donor Able Seaman Boatswain’s Mate Renee Mason it was a rewarding experience.

Red Cross staff had explained that due to her blood type, her best option would be to donate plasma to which she happily agreed.

“It is very comforting to know that 45 minutes of my time can make a world of difference to three other people,” Able Seaman Mason said.

Plasma makes up 55% of blood composition and carries platelets along with red and white blood cells to where they need to go.

It is used in 18 different ways including treating serious burns and cancer.

Returning donor Leading Seaman Communication Information Systems Adam Lynch said it was good to provide a donation while running a busy schedule.

“I am very happy that we were afforded the opportunity to donate and I hope that I will be able to participate on a more regular basis,” he said.

HMAS Childers is currently deployed to the northern approaches of Australia in support of Operation RESOLUTE to combat illegal activities in the region.
