A team from HMAS Coonawarra rallied together in October to conduct spinathon in support of Coonawarra’s Ocsober challenge. The ‘HMAS Coonawarra Spinathon Spinners’ completed the spinathon over the course of 12 hours, with each individual completing multiple sessions on a spin bike.
As well as cycling over 400km, the team raised approximately $800 for Life Education, Australia’s largest non-government provider of health education to children and young people, and the sponsor of the national Ocsober campaign. Combined with the remainder of the Ocsober participants at Coonawarra, the combined fundraising total is in excess of $3000 to date.
CMDR Favelle, who rode two circuits throughout the day, said the challenge was a demonstration of the value Coonawarra placed in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
“With the high operational tempo in the Top End, Royal Australian Navy members based at HMAS Coonawarra participate in PT sessions, base sporting challenges and Battle Smart sessions to encourage a healthy lifestyle, both physically and mentally,” CMDR Favelle said.
“Completing the month long Ocsober campaign with the 12 hour spinathon increased awareness of the positives of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and also raised funds for an excellent organisation,” he said.
The Life Education mascot, Healthy Harold, made an appearance at the spinathon, completing a quick spin on the bike and providing encouragement for the team.
