Around 1,880 Australian Defence Force personnel serving their nation on operations overseas will celebrate Christmas away from their families and friends this year.

HMAS Newcastle has returned to her home port of Fleet Base East, Garden Island, Sydney, following a six month deployment to the Middle East region.

Lieutenant Commander Matthew Cavedon receives the 2017 Admiral Nelson Sword of Excellence and a Gold Commendation from Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Tim Barrett, AO, CSC, RAN and his father Danny during a ceremony held in Canberra.

The Deputy Engineering Officer in HMAS Sirius has been awarded the Admiral Nelson Sword of Excellence for displaying qualities of outstanding seagoing leadership.

Mr Lakesh Sundar and Deputy Chair Royal Australian Navy Relief Trust Fund, Captain Lisa Batchler process the Christmas loan funds to be issued.

It was a jolly day in the Royal Australian Navy Relief Trust Fund Office on 5 December, when the staff hit the button to pay out $377,000 in interest free Christmas Loans to Navy personnel.
