Two World War II era aircraft bombs, secured onto a Royal Australian Navy Barge, await transport to a deep sea disposal site off the coast of Bougainville, during Operation RENDER SAFE 14.

Navy divers have lent their expertise to Operation RENDER SAFE this year forming an integral part of the tri-service Amphibious Task Group that were responding to the dangerous legacy of unexploded ordinance located in Torokina, Bougainville Island.

HMAS Toowoomba conducts operations off the coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean in support of Operation MANITOU.

HMAS Toowoomba completed a successful Operation MANITOU maritime security deployment to the Middle East Region on 13 December and is now heading home to Perth.

Coastal Mine Hunter HMAS Huon and Armidale Class Patrol Boat HMAS Launceston conducted a rendezvous in Australia’s northern waters recently to allow their bridge teams and junior watchkeeping officers to conduct a series of training manoeuvres.

On 11 December, 220 midshipmen and officer cadets graduated from the Australian Defence Force Academy. For one midshipman, graduation marked the start of a career that will have her following in her father's footsteps.

All twenty recruits who participated in the second iteration of Navy's Defence Indigenous Development Program (DIDP) graduated in a ceremony held in HMAS Cairns on 18 December.

At this time of year, I always reflect on the year we’ve had and what Navy has achieved. Who would have thought this time last year, we would have had our ships off Western Australia searching for a lost aircraft, intercepted so many drug smugglers in the Middle East, provided assistance to the people of the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan or that we would be tracking a Russian task force off our east coast?
