Australia's Invictus Games wheelchair basketball squad had its first outing against teams in the New South Wales autumn league competition only a day after many of the members had sat in a wheelchair for the first time.

Royal Australian Navy sailor Petty Officer Medic Nick Cherry takes a shot a goal against the Sutherland Sharks in a trial match at Shellharbour City Stadium basketball courts, Wollongong.

Petty Officer Medical Nick Cherry became an Advanced Life Support Paramedic with the Navy after joining in 2004. He was part of the military contingent that provided security and ceremonial support to the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and he was deployed to Afghanistan in 2011. Nick has bilateral osteoarthritis of the knees and has undergone multiple knee surgeries.

Defence’s wounded, injured and ill athletes will compete against the world’s best in the second iteration of the Invictus Games to be held in the US from 8-12 May.

HMAS Cerberus has won the men’s division of the 2016 Mons Cup rugby union competition, narrowly beating Fleet Base West 10-7 at Randwick Barracks in late March.
