On 5 May, HMAS Watson hosted a group of mentally and physically challenged individuals, aged from 20-55 years old, for a tour of the base.
The group from Rob’s Respite Group was greeted by members of Watson’s ship’s company and taken through the Bridge Training Facility, followed by a friendly game of cricket on Wilson’s Field and lunch on the Ostrowski Room verandah at the wardroom.
This is the third successive year the group has visited Watson. Since the visit, members of the ship’s company that volunteered to escort the group have embraced the principle “Nobody can do everything, but everyone can do something.”
Sub Lieutenant Nikki Patterson was one member of the ship’s company who volunteered to escort the visitors and said it was a wonderful experience.
“It was a wonderful opportunity for Watson personnel to make the days a little brighter for these people, while also providing some well earned respite for their carers,” Sub Lieutenant Patterson said.
The visit was organised by Watson's First Lieutenant, Lieutenant Mal O'Neill.
