Commanding Officer HMAS Arunta, Commander Cameron Steil, RAN, welcomes Chief of Staff - Headquarters Joint Task Force 633, Group Captain Nathan Christie aboard HMAS Arunta during a visit to Muscat, Oman.

Staff from Headquarters Joint Task Force 633 recently joined HMAS Arunta in Muscat, Oman, for a day of briefings prior to Arunta commencing operations in the Middle East region.

About 120 sailors from Australia, Canada and the US joined colleagues from the Royal New Zealand Navy frigate HMNZS Te Kaha to form a multinational team that went ashore in Kaikoura to support relief efforts.

In an exceptionally Kiwi way, the New Zealand Defence Force thanked a multinational crew of Australian, Canadian and US military personnel for supporting its disaster relief operation during a traditional powhiri at Kaikoura’s local marae.

A medic is an essential sailor on a Navy ship heading out on an operational deployment. There is no floating hospital in the middle of an ocean to assist sailors, nor is there an ambulance. There is only a helicopter to take people back to land.

Friends and family of HMAS Arunta farewelled their loved ones from the wharf at Fleet Base West as the ship departed for Operation Manitou in the Middle East Region.

There was a sombre tone at HMAS Stirling, in Western Australia, as the 191 men and women serving in HMAS Arunta said goodbye to loved ones and joined the frigate to depart for close to nine months in the Middle East.

Creating one of the most unusual sights of her deployment, HMAS Perth's 5-inch gun, harpoon anti-ship missile launchers and forecastle were all draped in hand-made quilts while alongside in Muscat, Oman recently.

Following a mid-deployment port visit to Dubai, HMAS Perth coordinated a passage exercise with United Arab Emirates Navy vessel P142 Makasib, a Mubarraz class fast attack craft.
