Climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge is an experience in itself, but doing so to raise the Navy's Ensign to fly over the city on the Navy's birthday - that's one to write home about.

The nation’s eyes were firmly focussed on the northern capital of Darwin on 19 February as the city paused to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin by Imperial Japanese forces.

A team from Training Authority-Submarines (TA-SM) comprising (L to R) Mr Keith Robinson, Training Systems Development Consultant; Commander Dylan Findlater, RAN, Director TA-SM, Commander Gavin Reeves, RAN, Training Manager TA-SM; Mr Brian Graves, Platform Systems Training Equipment Manager and Mr Anthony Masters, Platform  Instructor Auxiliaries/Weapons were awarded the Category three Navy Safety Award for the Submerged Signal Ejector Training Rig which will help reduce the risk of accidents happening at sea. Despite the oft sung words in the national anthem, Australians live often detached from the reality that “…our home is girt by sea”. In Canberra on 30 January, senior Defence leaders gathered at the Australian War Memorial to help launch a book that highlights Australia’s reliance on sea trade and a formidable Navy to protect sea lanes and prosperity.

Able Seaman Medic Shunsuke Takahashi checks the blood pressure of Ella Cordell (6) while sister Lily (8) watches closely at the ambulance display during the HMAS Stirling Families Day.

The gates were opened to Fleet Base West on 25 January, when HMAS Stirling hosted a Families Day for its 3,000 Defence and Australian Public Service personnel on Garden Island, Rockingham.
