HMAS Perth’s ‘Romeo’ MH-60R helicopter touched down at Jandakot airport recently for a brief stop over at the Royal Flying Doctor Services Western Australian Headquarters, before embarking in the Anzac class frigate for her Operation MANITOU deployment.

A Royal Flying Doctor Service PC12 was manoeuvred beside the MH-60R so that personnel from each service could take a look at each others’ most modern aircraft.

Perth
established a relationship with the Service three years ago. Conducting around 9,100 medical transfers and flying over eight million kilometres a year isn’t cheap, which is why the ship nominated the emergency health service as its charity of choice.

Over the years Perth has helped raise thousands of dollars for the doctors by offering VIP tour prizes at the annual Altitude Ball, helping the Western Australian branch of the Royal Flying Doctor Services remain airborne.

Nick Harvey, General Manager Corporate Affairs at the Royal Flying Doctor Services said the relationship was about more than money.

“We not only share the skies but we share a similar culture of innovation and capability,” Mr Harvey said.

“While the relationship started with Perth supporting us charitably, the relationship has grown into recognising the similarities between the two services.  “We both serve the Australian community, but we also have similarities in the way we deliver the service around safety, quality processes and culture.”

Perth’s
Commanding Officer, Captain Ivan Ingham agreed. “We, like the Royal Flying Doctor Service, act in common purpose,” he said. “By sharing information and ideas we can and will maximise the strategic effect of our platform and capabilities.”
