The second in a series of nine Navy Emerging Leaders Forums was held at the Tradewinds Hotel in Fremantle, Western Australia, recently.
The forums, which are being held across Australia over the next few months, aim to bring together Navy members from the ranks of Lieutenant, Sub Lieutenant, Petty Officer and Leading Seaman to discuss the theme “Leading for Success”.
They will give emerging leaders an opportunity for professional development by engaging with others who have led small teams, while also learning from the experience and knowledge of keynote speakers.
Facilitator, Lieutenant Commander Rebecca Wilson said the forums were aimed at emerging leaders generally with up to five years’ experience.
“We’re giving this cohort the opportunity to develop their leadership skills through our various key-note speakers, while reinforcing Navy values and how they’re best applied in the workplace,” she said.
“In today’s forum here in Fremantle, we have two key-note speakers - one being Deputy Chief of Navy, Rear Admiral Mark Hammond, and the other is AFLW Coach Michelle Cowan.
“These speakers, as well as a number of peers who will also speak today, will share the stories of their leadership journeys so far,” Lieutenant Commander Wilson said.
Michelle Cowan spoke to the forum about successful aspects of leadership in a team-driven environment.
“The synergy between the Australian Defence Force and high-performing AFL teams is incredible; we all want to achieve the same result and we do this by living by our signature behaviours,” she said.
“It’s about the ability to have honest and genuine conversations with our people to empower them, which can have a great influence on the way they do their jobs.
“Good leaders show genuine care for people and take the time to build real relationships to connect with people to understand what makes them tick as a person.
“There’s been a significant shift in how leadership is delivered today compared with how it was done in the past, and it comes back to taking the time to understand each individual to ensure they are aligned with the organisation’s goals,” Ms Cowan said.
The forums were presented by the Directorate of Navy Culture (DNC).
Leading Seaman, Petty Officer, Sub Lieutenant and Lieutenant ranks are encouraged to participate in one of the remaining seven NELF scheduled for 2019, as follows:
