A Navy family member has written a book to help children understand what their parents do in the Navy, and to help them cope when they are deployed.

Hayley Boswell, spouse of Chief Petty Officer Bradley Lynch, said she wrote the book for her five-month-old daughter Evie-May for when her dad was away.

“She loves the pictures and the bright colours, so I feel she connects with the book even being so young,” Ms Boswell said.

“I read the book to her often, even when her dad is not on deployment, as I believe it’s important she understands how important the Navy is in protecting our way of life.”

Ms Boswell said there had been much positive feedback from families who had bought the book, saying their children loved it and could relate to the images and words.

“I’ve had many families posting pictures on my Facebook page of their children reading the books, and providing great reviews – it just warms my heart and I’m grateful to them all,” she said.

“I think it’s important for Defence children to know and understand what their Australian Defence Force parents do, especially when they’re deployed.

“I’ve had an overwhelming response to the book and have sold more than 200 copies already, and am receivingat least 10 orders a day – I’m so appreciative Navy families are buying the book to read to their children.”

Ms Boswell said there had been such an overwhelming demand for her book she decided to write Army and Air Force versions as well.

“The Army version is in the process of being illustrated now and it looks pretty fantastic,” she said.

“An image of a teddy parachuting out of a plane is my favourite, so I’m excited to release this book, especially to help the children of those currently deployed.

“I’ll be releasing the Air Force version within the next month and will also be doing a ‘mum’ version for all three books.”

The books are $12.95 each plus postage and handling and are available at http://www.thepoppyemporium.com.au/product/my-dads-in-the-australian-navy/.
