Able Seaman Kristy Brown of HMAS Albatross was a guest speaker at the launch of Shoalhaven City Council’s NAIDOC celebrations this week.
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life.
Kristy said that since joining the Navy, “I’ve travelled to dangerous and exotic places, and some I didn’t even know existed. I’ve learnt to work hard and believe in myself and be strong and independent”.
“In my four years in the Navy I’ve been on an amazing journey”, Kristy told the audience which was made up of community elders and representatives of key Indigenous organisations.
Kristy stressed the importance of strategies and programs such as Defence’s Indigenous Pre Recruitment Course saying the support offered by the program was invaluable. “The staff really understood what it was like for me to leave my home and family and provided me the level of care and encouragement I needed to fulfil my dreams.”
