As southern states emerged from winter, the sailors, soldiers and marines located in Darwin enjoyed a tropical October day for the annual Top End Shield Swimming Carnival.

A male-dominated HMAS Albatross side won the Eastern Australian Area Netball Competition, outdoing HMAS Penguin in the final at Alexandria in late September.

After winning the past five Australian Services Bowls Association championships, Navy could not make it six in a row after being defeated in the 2016 final by the Air Force at Windsor Bowls Club, New South Wales.

For the second year in a row, last place was taken by the team from Navy Strategic Command made up of Commander Marcus Buttler, Lieutenant Commander Luke Hartfiel and Mr Alistair Smith.

The annual HMAS Harman Legacy Golf Day, held on 23 September at the former Air Force base at Fairbairn in Canberra, proved to be yet another great success, raising over $2,700 for Queanbeyan Legacy.
