Maintaining and improving HMAS Stirling’s security measures is a moving target that requires a ‘firm-grip and clear mind’ as base occupants increase to support future capabilities, and protect the nation's elite servicemen and women.

Stirling’s Assistant Command Security Officer Petty Officer Combat Systems Supervisor - Underwater Jason Rice is tasked with motivating the workforce to maintain their security clearance requirements and dealing with personnel security.

“My job here in Stirling involves maintaining the Unit Security Register, security clearance oversight and providing security awareness training and education,” Petty Officer Rice said.

“The role is satisfying - I like the security aspect of it and being able to delve into the world of Defence security.

Adelaide born Petty Officer Rice has been in the Navy for 16 years and signed-up because he wanted a career that was going to be challenging and of his ‘own making’.

“I wanted to get out of the house and forge my own career and path away from the safety net of home,” he said.

The most consistent aspect of life in the Navy is the tremendous variety, combining stimulating work opportunities with fulfilling lifestyles.

“We do PT twice a week and have ample opportunities for adventure training and workplace divisional events,” Petty Officer Rice said

“I also run after work and on weekends for personal exercise.

“Promoting maritime security is again on the horizon when I deploy in HMAS Ballarat during 2018 in support of Operation MANITOU in the Middle East region,” he said.
