Cricketing all-rounder, Able Seaman  Maritime Logistics - Support Operations Sarah Beard, was in the thick of the pressure of international competition in the Governor-General’s XI recent defeat of a South African women’s cricket side at Drummoyne Oval, Sydney.

This was the second time Able Seaman Beard had been selected in the side, she is the only member of the Australian Defence Force to achieve the honour.
With the fixture last year being rained out, Able Seaman Beard was at last able to display her skills that the Defence representative has shown in Australia and overseas.

The Governor-General’s XI won the match by just two wickets with only 11 balls to spare. Able Seaman Beard made six runs from 17 balls, before being run out during one of the final overs of the match.

“I was thrilled to be selected because it meant playing with some of the best female cricketers in the world, including our captain Ellyse Perry,” Able Seaman Beard said.

“I’ve loved cricket since playing in the back yard with my brothers as a kid. After joining the Navy, when I found out there was a women’s team, I couldn't wait to try out and keep playing.”

Inspired by the traditional Prime Minister’s XI match for Australia’s male cricketers, the Governor-General’s XI returned this summer after receiving a positive reception last year.

The Governor-General, his Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) said the team highlighted the great talent and experience of Australia’s women cricketers.

“Australian women cricketers are amongst the best in the world,” the Governor-General said.

“With a big summer of cricket ahead, this is an opportunity to see experienced and up-and-coming players test their mettle against the formidable South African team. There is no doubt this match will be a highlight on Australia’s cricketing calendar.

“I congratulate each player on being selected and their victory for the Governor-General’s XI – only the second time this has occurred.”

The side was chosen from all Australian States, with every player except Navy’s Able Seaman Beard enjoying an affiliation with a Women’s Big Bash franchised team.
