Victoria Cross recipient Daniel Keighran was the keynote speaker at the fourth Navy Emerging Leaders forum.
The forum, which was held in Cairns in early August, was one of a series being hosted around the country this year.
The events have been designed to give Navy’s emerging leaders an opportunity for professional development through discussions about the theme ‘Leading for Success’, as well as an opportunity to learn from the experiences and knowledge of keynote speakers.
Daniel Keighran VC spoke of the challenges he faced during his time in the Army and attributed his resilience to his grandfather.
He described his grandfather as being a key influential figure who guided him through some difficult decisions at milestones of his young life.
He told the NELF participants that he took his Grandfather’s advice to the battle field, and is still guided by those lessons today.
As father’s day approaches, the significance of influential parental figures and the important guidance that they impart can be celebrated.
Mentors are often a pillar of strength in our early years, who rarely demand anything in return; the celebration of father’s day is a way to show our appreciation to them.
The VC recipient spoke with the emerging leaders during the lunch break and openly shared his leadership attributes and ways he uses them in the corporate setting.
Leading Seaman Physical Training Instructor Holly Lloyd from HMAS Cairns participated as a speaker in the compelling story session on the day and said she thoroughly enjoyed the forum and would return to her workplace with new ideas on leadership and how to put them into practice.
Holly also was thrilled to hear from her fellow compelling speakers, the Head of Navy Engineering Rear Admiral Colin Lawrence and Daniel Keighran VC.
“All had led in different circumstances but all emphasised that knowing your people and working collaboratively are key components of leadership,” she said.
She strongly urged all those who can attend a forum in the future to do so and she thanked Deputy Chief of Navy and the Directorate of Navy Culture for giving her the opportunity to attend an event that truly represented Chief of Navy’s commitment to the investment and empowerment of the next generation of Navy leaders.
Officers and sailors at the ranks of Leading Seaman, Petty Officer, Sub Lieutenant and Lieutenant are encouraged to participate in one of the remaining four NELF scheduled for 2019, as follows:
