White Ribbon at sea on operations

HMAS Newcastle ship’s company reinforced Navy's position against domestic violence with a White Ribbon morning tea in the Middle East on 24 July.

Commanding Officer Commander Dominic MacNamara challenged male crew members to help end violence against women.

“This is not just another campaign about shocking and indefensible actions which take place in our nation’s homes,” he said.

“It is about realising that ending violence against women, wherever it happens, is one way for us to live our Navy values in a practical way.”

Despite being deployed as part of Operation MANITOU, Chief Petty Officer Marine Technician Graeme Louk said it was still important to find ways men could think and act to make a difference.

“Women’s safety is a man’s issue,” he said.

“We are all lucky enough to have women in our lives to love and be loved by.

“Every one of them has a right to be safe from any form of violence.”

Chaplain Andrew Watters took the opportunity to explain why he made a pledge to help end violence against women.

“I’ve seen the physical, emotional and financial effects abuse has on women,” he said.

“I have two daughters and a grand-daughter, I never want them, or any woman, to suffer that way.”
