The more-than 50,000 Australians who served in the Vietnam War were honoured with services of remembrance throughout the nation on the weekend.

Five hundred and twenty-one Australians were killed in the conflict, which ran from the early 1960s to the mid-1970s.

Sunday 18 August 2013 was not only Vietnam Veterans’ Day, but also the 47th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan; one of the bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War in which 18 Australians were killed and two dozen were wounded.

In Hobart, the Lieutenant Governor of Tasmania, the Honourable Chief Justice Alan Blow, accompanied by Mrs Blow, gave the address and placed a wreath at the Vietnam Veterans' Service of Remembrance. Among the many other wreaths laid was one from each of the Armed Services.

Commander Stacey Porter, Commanding Officer, Navy Headquarters Tasmania represented the Royal Australian Navy.

Able Seaman Ben Melville and Leading Seaman Allan Bahr served on the catafalque party.
