Survey operations near the Goulburn Islands, 300 kilometres east of Darwin, has provided an opportunity to engage with a remote local community.

Over the past few months, HMA Ships Benalla and Shepparton have been conducting survey operations in an area near the group of small islands and islets in the Arafura Sea off the coast of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory.

In particular, South Goulburn Island has provided a perfect haven from unfavourable weather and as an ideal position to setup and monitor tidal and geodetic infrastructure.

To pay respects to the traditional custodians of the land and thank the people who inhabit the small town of Warruwi; the ships’ companies engaged with the local school children, for an afternoon of sport.

Shepparton’s, Sub Lieutenant Izaak Gurney was one of the crew who said the opportunity was not one to be missed after an extensive survey.
"The afternoon was an excellent experience to meet with the young people of the island and show the Navy's support to the island's small community," he said.

Executive Officer Shepparton, Lieutenant Thomas Rue offered his appreciation to Warruwi Primary School's Principal, staff and students who helped organise the occasion and welcomed both crews into their community.

“The use of this particular spot has been significant to the achievement of the survey mission and could not have been achieved without the grateful cooperation of the township of Warruwi,” he said.

Benalla and Shepparton are Survey Motor Launches based out of HMAS Cairns, and more information about their class of ship can be found at: http://www.navy.gov.au/fleet/ships-boats-craft/agsc
