Chaplain Kate Lord of HMAS Cerberus will put herself in the hands of God and a single rope as she abseils 113 metres down the St James building in Melbourne on 28 April.

The event is part of Anglicare’s 'Altitude Shift' program to raise money for the charity and was established to give everyday people an extraordinary opportunity to help those less fortunate.

“I don’t run, so I’m not ever going to do a fun run; I think they’re an oxymoron,” Chaplain Lord said.

“I thought jumping off a building is something that would be a lot of fun.”

Chaplain Lord is the only female Navy chaplain and, as a member of the Anglican Church, wanted to aid its main charity that supports at-risk pregnant women, Christmas gift appeals and emergency housing.

Chaplain Lord last abseiled at the Royal Australian Naval College in 1992 and, apart from maintaining fitness, there’s no other preparation before she takes the plunge.

“I’m going to rock up on the day, they’re going to strap me in and I’m going to walk backwards off a building,” she said.

Anglicare Victoria Chief Executive Officer Paul McDonald said funds raised from the event would go towards their youth-focused programs for people contending with hardship and disadvantage.

“We need Victorians’ help to raise funds for young people living in out-of-home care, and in return, we can provide a once-in-a-lifetime experience you’ll never forget,” he said.

“If you’re a thrillseeker or have always wanted to give abseiling a go, now is the perfect time to tick it off the bucket list.”
Participants can register for $150 and must fundraise $850 to secure their spot.
